Gautam Swami's doubt before becoming ganadhar
Indrabhuti Gautam (Gautam Swami) had a deep doubt about the existence of the soul (Atma). He wondered whether there really exists an eternal, independent self beyond the body, and whether the soul can be known or proven in the way teachers claim. This doubt motivated him to test Mahavira’s truth.
Mahavira addressed Gautam by name and gently confronted his doubt, using scriptural references and clear reasoning about the soul’s existence. This conversation dispelled Gautam’s misgivings, and he accepted Mahavira as his guru, becoming Mahavira’s first and chief disciple (Ganadhar). His doubt was the seed that led to his initiation along with hundreds of followers, and later to the organization and transmission of Mahavira’s teachings. The episode is told as a pivotal moment in Jain narrative and is described with variations in Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions, but the essential point — the doubt about the soul and its resolution by the omniscient teacher — remains central.
