In Jainism, the concept of 84 lakh yoni (8.4 million wombs or life-forms) refers to the countless types of birthplaces or life-forms through which a soul can transmigrate in the cycle of birth and death (samsara). According to Jain philosophy, due to karmas, the soul wanders through these various yonis (species or forms of existence)—which are broadly classified into four main categories:

1. Heavenly beings (Devas)
2. Human beings (Manushya)
3. Animal and plant life (Tiryanch)
4. Hellish beings (Narakis)

The "84 lakh yoni" is a symbolic way to express the vast diversity and innumerable possibilities of life forms where a soul may be reborn. The suffering associated with wandering through these yonis is immense, and liberation (moksha) is attained when the soul is freed from this cycle by destroying all karmas through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.

This concept emphasizes the importance of spiritual practice, self-restraint, and efforts towards liberation, as being reborn as a human is considered rare and precious—a unique opportunity to achieve moksha.
