Whst are Bhav karm
Bhav karma are the mental (non-physical) part of karma in Jainism. They are the inner thoughts, feelings and intentions (anger, ego, greed, deceit, etc.) that attract karma particles to the soul. In Jain theory, bhav karma and dravya karma are tied together: bhav karma governs how karma binds, and dravya karma are the actual karmic particles that stick to the soul. When you think, speak, or act with those passions, bhav karma binds to you and paves the way for dravya karma to attach, influencing your future birth, life duration, and experiences. Both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions accept this concept, though they may differ in some details of interpretation and terminology.
Key points in simple terms:
- Bhav karma = mental karmic tendency or psychic karma created by our mindset and intentions.
- They are the cause that attracts dravya karma and the basis for future bondage.
- They interact with dravya karma: bhav karma attracts, dravya karma binds; together they shape life’s results.
- Stoppage of new bhav karma (bhav-samvara) is the first step toward liberation.
