how is Jainism different from other relgions?

    10 months ago 74

Here are some core ways Jainism differs from many other religions, in simple terms:

    • No creator God for this world
    - Jainism teaches that the universe is uncreated and operates by natural laws. Spiritual progress comes from the individual soul’s effort, not from worship of a supreme creator.
    • The soul and karma system
    - Every soul is-inherently divine but bound by karma. Actions, thoughts, and intentions accumulate karma that shapes future lives. Liberation (moksha) is freedom from all karmic bondage.
    • Anekantavada (non-absolutism)
    - Truth is nuanced and complex. Realities can be seen from many perspectives. This encourages humility, open-minded inquiry, and avoiding dogmatic certainty.
    • Ahimsa (non-violence) to all living beings
    - Non-violence is the guiding principle in thought, speech, and action. This leads to strict ethical living, vegetarianism in practice, and careful consideration of harm in everyday choices.
    • Aparigraha (non-attachment)
    - Minimizing possessions and desires helps reduce karma and violence caused by craving. Simplicity and self-control are valued over material wealth.
    • Rigorous ascetic and ethical path
    - Jain practice includes strict vows (ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha) and a long tradition of meditation, fasting, and disciplined living, especially for monks and nuns.
    • Tirthankaras as guides, not creators
    - Jainism honors enlightened teachers called Tirthankaras (Jinas) who show the path to liberation. They are not gods who create the universe but perfected souls who have conquered karma.
    • Emphasis on personal responsibility
    - Liberation depends on one’s own right belief, right knowledge, and right conduct. Help from others is advisory; the actual progress comes from one’s own effort.
    • Distinct cosmology and time cycles
    - Jain cosmology describes a finite universe with cycles of rise and decline, not a linear history led by a single divine plan.

If you’d like, I can explain these ideas with specific Jain scriptures or stotras (and their meanings) in simple terms, or compare them more directly with a particular other religion.
