Can we eat makhana?
Yes. Makhana (fox nuts) is generally allowed in Jainism. It is a seed, not a root vegetable, so it involves less harm to living beings compared to uprooting roots. Many Jains include makhana in their everyday diet and also during vrat periods when they keep things simple and clean.
Note:
- Some families or sanghs may have stricter rules during Paryushan or Chaturmas, so always follow your local maryada and guru’s guidance.
- There is no major difference between Digambar and Śvetāmbara rulings specifically about makhana; both traditions tend to allow seeds/compounds that involve less violence, conditioned on local practice.
