Who are all satis in Jainism

    10 months ago 93

In Jainism, “satī” means a virtuous woman. There is a special group known as the sol satī ( Sixteen virtuous women) who are widely honoured in Śvetāmbara Jain tradition. These satīs are not a single fixed list in all texts, but a core set that is repeatedly revered in prayers and in moral tales. The idea is to look up to their steadfast devotion to dharma, whether in marriage or in renunciation.

Common examples that appear in Jain devotional lists include:

    • Sita
    • Draupadi
    • Damayanti
    • Rajimati
    • Chandanbala (Chandanbalika)
    • Brahmi
    • Meenakshi
    • Subhadra
    • Sulasa
    • Anjana
    • Maina Sundari
    • Padmavati
    • Prabhavati
    • Shivā (Shiva/Shivati)
    • Shīlavati
    • Nalinā or others named in various recensions

Note: exact names can vary between texts and communities, but the tradition centers on a fixed core of virtuous women whose stories are read aloud and recited in rituals, and who are used as models of lay and renunciant conduct.

Some satī narratives are also used in daily Jain prayers (for example in the Bharahesara nī Sajjhāy), and these figures are kept as auspicious exemplars for right conduct.
