Meaning of Achourya
Achourya (अचौर्य) means non-stealing. It is the practice of not taking what is not given, in thought, word, and deed. In Jainism, this vow is also called Asteya and is one of the key vows that both laypeople and monks follow.
- Core meaning: do not take another’s property without permission; do not obtain or use things by deceit, fraud, or unjust means.
- Spiritual aim: cultivate honesty, humility, and respect for others’ rights; avoid harming others through theft or greed.
- Traditions: the essential meaning of Achourya is the same in Digambar and Shwetambar traditions, though some textual details may vary in their commentaries.
