Anuvrat means “small vow.” It is a Jain concept for lay followers to adopt a simple, practical code of conduct to grow in moral discipline. The term itself comes from anu (small) + vrat (vow). In tradition, there is the older idea of five small vows (anuvratas) that laypeople traditionally follow, and in the 20th century the Anuvrat movement added a broader, modern set of vows to promote ethical living for all.

What it typically includes for lay practice:

• The five traditional anuvratas (small vows) for householders:

- Ahimsa: non-violence - Satya: truthfulness - Asteya: non-stealing - Brahmacharya: restraint in sexual conduct (chastity within marriage) - Aparigraha: non-attachment / limited possessions

• These are supported by further Gunavratas and Shikshavratas to help protect and strengthen the five.

Different Jain traditions note the same core idea, but the exact wording and emphasis can vary between Digambar and Śvetāmbara communities.
