Atichar (also written as Atichr/Attichar) in Jainism means a minor transgression or small lapse while observing a vow. It is not a complete breaking of the vow, but a slip that slightly taints its purity and should be avoided and confessed for spiritual progress. Each vow often has a set of these minor transgressions (commonly described as five Atichars for a given vow), and practitioners strive to minimize even these small faults. The concept is applied to the main vows like non-violence (ahimsa), truth (satya), non-stealing (asteya), celibacy (brahmacharya), and non-possession (aparigraha). The idea and wording can vary a little between Digambar and Shwetambar traditions, but the core meaning remains the same.
