He then wandered as a mendicant (ahara-vigrah), living an austere life in forests and towns for 12 years, practicing severe penance and meditation until he attained kevala jnana (enlightenment). After enlightenment, he taught the path of right conduct (samyak-darshan, samyak-jnana, and samyak-charitra) to help others achieve liberation.
