Eaay story to tell children about pooja importance

    10 months ago 37

Here is a short, child-friendly story about pooja and its importance from a Jain perspective.

Title: The Little Lamp of Gratitude

Once in a peaceful village lived a curious child named Aarav. Every evening, his grandmother would light a small lamp and say, “Pooja is not about big words or shining things. It is about remembering the good things in our life and being gentle to every living being.”

One night, Aarav asked, “Grandma, why do we bow and chant during pooja?”

Grandma smiled and pointed to a tiny, glowing lamp. “This lamp helps us remember three simple things. First, gratitude: we thank those who help us—our parents, teachers, friends, and the tiny creatures we share this world with. Second, non-violence: pooja reminds us to be kind and not to hurt anyone or anything. Third, inner peace: when we quiet our minds and speak truth, our hearts stay calm, like this small light in a dark room.”

Aarav thought about it. The next day, he stepped gently on the path to school, letting a small ant cross first. He shared his lunch with a hungry friend and told the truth even when it was hard. Each act of care made his heart glow a little brighter, like the lamp his grandmother lit each evening.

That evening, Aarav asked, “Grandma, what should we offer in pooja?”

She replied, “We offer our attention—our thoughts and actions. We offer a moment of stillness to listen to our conscience, so we can be kinder, more honest, and more afraid of hurting living beings. The truest pooja is living with care, truth, and non-violence every day.”

Aarav understood. Pooja was not just a ritual; it was a promise to protect life, to speak truth, and to practice kindness. From that day, he kept a small diary of three things: one thing he could thank someone for, one act of kindness he could do, and one way he would be truthful that day. The lamp in the corner of his room glowed a little brighter with every good deed.

Moral: Pooja teaches us gratitude, compassion, and inner peace. By remembering the good in the world and choosing kindness every day, we honor the life in all beings.

If you’d like, I can share a shorter version for very young children or a version with a specific Jain Sthanakvasi, Digambar, or Shvetambar emphasis.
