Namo jinanam Jiya bhayanam meaning
Namo jinanam Jiya bhayanam is a line from a Jain prayer and is commonly understood as:
- Namo jinānām: I bow to the Jinas (the enlightened Tirthankaras, who have conquered inner passions and attained kevala-jnana).
- Jiya bhayanam: the conqueror of fears (often explained as "the one who vanquishes fear in the heart" or “conqueror of seven fears,” depending on the tradition).
In Jain tradition this phrase appears in namoththunam sutras and is treated as a respectful dedication to the Omniscient Ones who protect and inspire fearlessness in seekers. The meaning is the same across Digambar and Śvetāmbara lineages, though some recensions may word the surrounding lines slightly differently.
