which jain granths are availabe for me to ask questions

    10 months ago 70

Here are the main Jain granths (scriptures and important treatises) you can ask questions about. I’ve kept them grouped by tradition, since the accepted canons differ between Digambaras and Śvetāmbaras.

    Śvetāmbara Jain granths

    • Agamas (scriptures of the Tirthankaras; the original discourses of Mahavira as preserved by Śvetāmbara monks)
    • Anga/Bhāṣya corpus (traditional early sections of the Agama literature)
    • Tattvārthasūtra (foundational text on Jain philosophy of reality and ethics)
    • Dasavaikalika and other early Nyāyas (various commentaries and digests on Jain philosophy)
    • Niyamasāra (practical path and ethics)
    • Pravacanasāra (systematic overview of Jain doctrine)
    • Śrāvakācāra (ethics and conduct for lay followers)
    • Upādhyāya and Śrāvakapaddhati (disciplinaries and guidelines for monks and lay followers)
    • Ślokavārtā, Kaṭhopaniṣad-like or devotional stotras (various stotras and devotional compositions)
    • Chedopāyādhikaraṇa (ritual and ethical topics in some Śvetāmbara traditions)

    Digambara Jain granths

    • Jain Śrutakevali and canonical works (Differences in canon organization lead to different collections)
    • Tattvārthasūtra (also highly revered in many Digambara circles, with Digambara commentary tradition)
    • Śrāvakācharitra, Śrāvikācāra (ethics for lay followers in Digambara lineage)
    • Nyāya and Pādaśodhana treatises (philosophical works unique to certain Digambara lineages)
    • Pravacanasāra and other compendia (in Digambara versions and commentaries)
    • Jain mirrors of philosophy, yoga, and ethics (commentarial and devotional works unique to Digambara tradition)

    General note

    • The exact list and order of scriptures can vary by region and sub-tradition within both Śvetāmbara and Digambara communities. If you tell me which tradition you follow (Śvetāmbara or Digambara) and what topic you’re curious about (ethics, philosophy, cosmology, ritual, etc.), I can point you to specific granths and passages.

If you’d like, I can also provide:

    • a short, accurate excerpt from a chosen text (in transliteration) along with its Jain interpretation (arth)
    • a plain-language summary of a chapter or verse
    • guidance on how these texts differ in interpretation between the two traditions

Note: I can respond with authentic Jain interpretations only. If you want to see a specific granth or verse explained, tell me the title and what you’d like to know.
