    Dress code of sadhu

    one year ago 766

In Jainism, the dress code of a sadhu (monk) is a reflection of their vows of non-possession (aparigraha), simplicity, and renunciation. The exact attire can differ between the two main sects: Digambara and Śvētāmbara.

    Digambara Sadhu:

    • "Digambara" means "sky-clad". Digambara monks practice complete renunciation, including clothing. They do not wear any clothes, symbolizing absolute non-attachment and detachment from worldly possessions.
    • They may carry only a few essential items: a peacock feather whisk (to gently remove insects from their path), a water pot (kamandalu), and scriptures.

    Śvētāmbara Sadhu:

    • "Śvētāmbara" means "white-clad." Śvētāmbara monks and nuns wear simple, unstitched or minimally stitched white cloth.
    • Male Śvētāmbara sadhus typically wear two pieces of white cloth: one as a lower garment and one as an upper garment.
    • Female Śvētāmbara sadhvis also wear simple white sari-like garments.
    • They may also carry a "muhapatti" (a white cloth held over the mouth to prevent harm to airborne microorganisms) and a whisk broom (rajoharan).

    General Principles:

    • The clothing is kept simple, clean, and minimal, free from decoration or color.
    • The attire is designed to maintain humility, minimize harm to living beings, and avoid attachment.

The dress code is an important aspect of a sadhu’s practice of self-discipline, humility, and non-attachment, all central tenets of Jain philosophy.
