Meaning of Santharo
Santharo is the Jain practice known as Sallekhana. It means voluntary and steady thinning of the body and of one’s intake of food and liquids, undertaken near the end of life with calmness, self-control, and spiritual intention. The aim is to purify karma and attain liberation (moksha). It is not considered suicide in Jain thought; it is a disciplined spiritual act done with guidance and under right conditions, typically when death is near due to old age, illness, or extreme circumstances.
Notes on traditions:
- Both Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions recognize Sallekhana, though the emphasis and formal details of practice can differ between lineages.
- It is undertaken with full awareness, repentance, and detachment, and is traditionally done with the support of a spiritual guide.
