    Gutham swami and Gowtham buddya

    10 months ago 111
    • Gutham Swami (Gautam Swami)
    - Who he is: Gutham Swami, also called Gautama Swami, is considered Mahavira’s chief or principal disciple and is traditionally identified as the first Ganadhar (the primary disciple who organized and transmitted Mahavira’s teachings). In different Jain traditions some details vary, but the core idea is that he was the senior monk who helped preserve Mahavira’s sermons. ( jainknowledge.com) - Significance: He is renowned for his role in compiling and transmitting Mahavira’s teachings to later generations, and for being a revered example of renunciation, study, and devotion within Jainism. Some traditions also describe his early doubt and subsequent acceptance of Mahavira’s teachings, which is a notable story about his path to becoming Ganadhar. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Gowtham buddya (Gautam Buddha)
    - Who he is in general: The name Gowtham Buddya seems to refer to Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Gautama Buddha is not a figure in Jainism as a Jina or Mahavira’s disciple. Jainism and Buddhism are separate traditions with their own founders and lineages. - In Jain perspective: Jain texts and traditions focus on the 24 Tirthankaras and on the Ganadharas who transmitted Mahavira’s teachings. While Jainism recognizes the spiritual achievements of enlightened beings in general, Gautama Buddha is not counted among Jain teachers or in the Jain scriptural canon as a Jain teacher. If you’d like, I can point to Jain sources that discuss how Jainism views other traditions and enlightened beings. ( jainknowledge.com)
