Is buying clothes produced by child labor wrong?

    9 months ago 50

From a Jain perspective, buying clothes produced by child labor is not acceptable.

    Why:

    • Ahimsa (non-violence) calls us to avoid causing harm to any living being. Child labor often involves exploitation, poor working conditions, and harm to vulnerable children, which contradicts the Jain commitment to non-harming.
    • Satya (truth) and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness/non-attachment) urge honesty about how products are made and a simple, ethical way of living. Supporting goods made by exploiting children conflicts with a truthful, compassionate lifestyle.
    • Karuna (compassion) and upholding the dignity of all beings lead us to prefer fair treatment of workers and to support systems that protect children’s rights and wellbeing.
    • Anekantavada (many-sided reality) reminds us to consider the broader impact of our choices: even if a product seems affordable or convenient, the hidden costs to people and communities matter.

    What you can do:

    • Choose brands that publish transparent supply chains and verify they do not employ child labor.
    • Prefer certifications or fair-trade products that guarantee ethical labor practices.
    • Support initiatives that improve education and welfare for workers’ families, reducing pressure to use child labor.
    • If in doubt, opt for simpler, long-lasting clothing and reduce consumption to minimize demand for ethically problematic production.

In short: ethically, it is preferable to avoid clothes produced with child labor, aligning your purchasing with non-harming, truthful, and compassionate living.
