Is it ok to not sweep bugs out of the way while walking if I’m tired?
In Jainism, ahimsa (non-violence) toward all living beings is central. One should not willfully harm insects or other life, even if tired. If you’re too tired to walk carefully, the compassionate approach is to rest and take extra care so you don’t hurt any creature. Practically, people often:
- Keep a lookout for insects on the ground and avoid stepping on them.
- Use a small tool or broom to gently move or sweep tiny beings away from the path.
- Walk slowly and mindfully, especially in areas where insects are common.
- If possible, rest in a clean spot rather than rushing through spaces where you might collide with life.
Monks and nuns traditionally carry a whisk to sweep the path before they sit or lie down, reflecting the deep emphasis on not harming even very small beings. Lay followers are encouraged to uphold the same spirit in daily life, adapting to circumstances with compassion.
