Do I need to sweep bugs out of the way if on a run?
Yes. In Jain practice, ahimsa (non-violence) extends to all living beings, including tiny insects. When you’re about to move, it is customary to sweep the ground or path in front of you to prevent harming bugs or insects that might be underfoot.
If you’re running, you can still honor this principle by:
- choosing a clean, clear path where you’re less likely to step on insects, if possible
- moving slowly and mindfully when you see insects on the ground
- carrying a small broom/brush to gently sweep the path ahead if feasible
If sweeping isn’t practical during a run, simply proceed with awareness and gentleness, avoiding reckless steps and harming fewer beings as you go. The key is intention and mindfulness in every step.
