Why sex is sin? If not hurting anyone

    9 months ago 210

In Jainism, sex is not labeled a sin simply for being sex. The emphasis is on how desire (kāmā) and attachment arise and what karma they generate.

    • Reason it’s treated carefully: Sex is a strong source of attachment and passion. When lust grips the mind, it tends to lead to harm, deceit, jealousy, or exploitation, and such actions bind karmic particles. The goal of Jain practice is to reduce passions that cause harm and bind karma, so sexual desire is kept under discipline.
    • For monks and nuns: Complete celibacy (brahmacharya) is required. This helps uproot attachment and minimize karmic bondage.
    • For lay (householders): Sexual activity is allowed within marriage and should be practiced with restraint, fidelity, mutual respect, and non-harm. The aim is peaceful contentment, not domination or exploitation, and to limit desires that feed greed, deceit, or anger.
    • What can make it problematic:
    - Adultery, coercion, or harm to others. - Obsessive attachment, deceit, or exploitation. - Breaking non-harm (ahimsa) through deceit or violence in pursuit of desire. - Excessive indulgence that pulls the mind away from spiritual duties.
    • Differences between traditions: Both Digambara and Śvetāmbara traditions counsel restraint and self-control, but they differ on whether renunciation is needed for all and on certain disciplinary details. The central aim in both is to reduce sensuality to progress spiritually.

If you want, I can explain how specific Jain scriptures describe restraint and karma related to sensual impulses in simple terms.
