how do the Jains earn the priveledge of rebirth

    9 months ago 59

In Jainism, there isn’t a concept of earning a “privilege of rebirth” in the sense of gaining a reward. Rebirth happens because the soul is bound by karma. The kind of rebirth you take depends on the balance of karmas you accumulate through your actions, thoughts, and passions.

    Key points:

    • Karma and rebirth: Every action, thought, or emotion leaves karmic seeds. Positive thoughts and non-harmful actions can lead to milder, more favorable rebirths, while negative passions create heavier karmas and less favorable rebirths.
    • The goal is liberation: Jains aim to end the cycle of birth and death (samsara) by purifying the soul and shedding karmas, not by seeking more rebirths.
    • How to influence karma in daily life:
    - Follow the three jewels: right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct. - Observe the vows and ethics: non-violence (ahimsa), truth (satya), non-stealing (asteya), celibacy or controlled conduct (brahmacharya), and non-possessiveness (aparigraha). - Practice right conduct in daily life: kindness, honesty, generosity, and restraint of anger and passions. - For monks and nuns: observe the great vows (mahavratas) and disciplined spiritual practices; for householders: follow the five vows and supportive disciplines. - Purify conduct through austerities, fasting, meditation, and study of Jain scriptures, which help reduce accumulated karmas.

Bottom line: Jains don’t seek a rebirth as a goal; they seek to shed karmas and attain kevala jnana (absolute knowledge) and ultimately moksha (liberation) from the cycle of rebirth.
