    explain asrava in simple words

    9 months ago 81

Here is a simple way to understand asrava in Jainism:

    • What it is: Asrava means the inflow or entering of karmic particles into the soul. These karmas bind to the soul because of our actions, thoughts, and speech.
    • Why it happens: When we act with strong emotions or passions (like anger, pride, greed, deceit, attachment), our mind and body “pick up” karmic particles. These particles attach to the soul and create karmic bondage.
    • What kinds of actions cause it: Any action, thought, or word done with these passions can cause asrava. It’s not about big deeds alone; simple mental states can also bring in karmas.
    • Why it matters: The karmas that inflow because of asrava lead to future experiences (joy, suffering, rebirth) according to the law of karma. The more asrava, the more karma binds the soul.
    • How to reduce or stop it: To prevent or limit asrava, practice right belief, right knowledge, and right conduct (the Jain path). Also, cultivate detachment, self-control, and non-attachment to passions. This helps the soul shed karma later (nirjara) and move toward liberation (moksha).
    • Quick analogy: Think of the soul as a clean mirror. When you act with strong passions, karmic particles stick to the mirror and dim its clarity. By reducing passions and following a disciplined path, the shine of the soul can be restored over time.

Note: In Jain teachings, there are various ways to describe how passions cause asrava, but the core idea is the same: emotional states and actions bind karmic matter to the soul.

If you’d like, I can explain how asrava fits with the different kinds of karma (like dravya and bhava karmas) or how to practice specific steps to reduce it.
