What to say when going past a temple
In Jainism, when passing by a temple (derasar), it is customary to show respect, even if you are not entering the temple. Many Jains will fold their hands in the namaskar mudra (a gesture of prayer or respect) and mentally recite a prayer or greeting. A common phrase to recite is the Navkar Mantra (Namokar Mantra), which is the most fundamental and revered prayer in Jainism. Alternatively, you may simply say "Namo Jinānām" (I bow to the Jinas) in your mind.
The act of bowing your head or joining your palms together as you pass shows reverence for the Tirthankaras and the sanctity of the temple. It is also a reminder to cultivate humility and respect for the teachings of Jainism.
