In Jain cosmology, there is one central Mount Meru (often called Sumeru) at the exact center of the universe. Surrounding it, in the four cardinal directions, are four subsidiary Meru mountains. Collectively, these five Merus—one central and four around it—form the core topography of the cosmos. They are considered celestial/topographic features of the Jain world, not geographical places on the earthly plane.

• This description is common to both Digambara and Śvetāmbara traditions; there isn’t a major doctrinal difference about the five Merus between the two.
