    Panchandiya sutra meaning

    9 months ago 65

Panchindiya Sutra ( Panchindiya-samvarano ) is a short hymn praising the spiritual guru and listing the 36 qualities of a true Jain acharya. It is commonly recited at the start of a samayika or as a tribute to one’s teacher. The core idea is to honor the guru’s self-discipline and virtues, which are seen as a guide for practitioners.

    Original text (as in Jain scriptures): Panchindiya-samvarano, taha navaviha-bambhachera-guttidharo. Chauviha-kasäya-mukko, Iah atthärasa-gunehim sanjutto. … 1 Pancha-mahavvaya-jutto, pancha-vihäyära-pälana-samattho. Pancha-samio tigutto, Chhattisa-guno guru majjha. … 2

    Arth (meaning) in brief:

    • A guru who has full control over the five senses (touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing), observes the nine forms of celibacy, and is free from the four passions (anger, ego, deceit, greed) is described with eighteen qualities.
    • A guru upholds the five great vows, the five kinds of conduct, the five samitis (carefulness), and the three guptis (restraints of mind, speech, body) – totaling thirty-six qualities.
    • The sutra is used to invoke and honor the spiritual teacher and to remind practitioners of the guru’s ideal discipline.

    Notes:

    • There are minor textual variations between Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions in wording, but the core meaning remains the same: reverence for the guru’s discipline and the 36 qualities.

If you want, I can also share the brief explanation of each of the 36 qualities as taught in Jain tradition.
