Which funds can be used in which work

    10 months ago 69

In Jainism, wealth (dhan) is to be used in ways that reduce harm and increase welfare, aligned with ahimsa (non-violence) and aparigraha (non-attachment). Generally, funds can be used for work that supports spiritual uplift, welfare, and ethical living. A simple guide:

    • For monastic support and religious activities
    - Funds that sustain monks/nuns and their day-to-day needs (food, robes, medicines, maintenance of temples and Jain centers, religious events, and study/teaching activities). - This is considered dharma dana (charity in support of dharma).
    • For the needy and ethical welfare
    - Food, shelter, health care, education, and relief for the poor, elderly, or underprivileged—especially when it avoids harm and promotes welfare. - This is artha dana (charity connected to worldly welfare) and is encouraged when it leads to reducing suffering without creating new bondage through attachment.
    • For public welfare and culture
    - Support for schools, libraries, cultural programs, ayambil or fasting-related programs, and activities that teach Jain values (non-violence, honesty, truth, self-control).
    • For animals and the environment
    - Care for animals, protection of life, and ecological projects that align with non-violence and compassion.

    Important principles to follow:

    • Avoid waste, extravagance, and activities that cause harm or promote violence.
    • Share with humility; give without insisting on recognition or gain.
    • Prefer long-term welfare over short-term luxury; prioritize sustainable, virtuous uses of wealth.
    • Maintain transparency and avoid misappropriation; ensure funds reach their intended purpose.

If you can share a bit more about the exact context (temple fund, charitable trust, personal donation, or a specific work), I can tailor this guidance to that situation in line with Jain teachings.
