Why cant we find stability in life

    9 months ago 33

In Jainism, lasting stability in life comes from turning inward and aligning with the true path of the soul, not from external circumstances alone.

    Key ideas:

    • Bondage and freedom: Our actions (karma) bind or help liberate the soul. External ups and downs are natural, but inner steadiness comes from reducing karmic bondage.
    • The three jewels (Ratnatraya): Right faith (samyak darshan), right knowledge (samyak jnana), and right conduct (samyak caritra) give a solid foundation. When you live with truthful understanding, you aren’t shaken by every change around you.
    • Five vows and ethical living: For laypeople, following non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness, non-stealing, chastity, and non-possessiveness helps calm the mind and reduce craving.
    • Detachment and restraint: Letting go of excessive attachment to people, objects, and outcomes brings steadiness. This doesn’t mean indifference; it means seeing things as temporary and working with balance.
    • Anekantavada (many-sided reality): Accepting that truth has many facets reduces harsh judgments and inner conflict, bringing mental peace.
    • Regular practices: Meditation (samayik), self-examination (pratikraman), and mindful living support inner stability and reduce reactive behavior.

    Practical steps to cultivate stability:

    • Reflect daily on your beliefs (samyak darshan) and check if your actions align with them.
    • Practice honest, non-harmful choices even in small matters; build consistency over time.
    • Observe desires and cravings without acting on them immediately; pause, breathe, decide.
    • Set clear, achievable goals and accept that some outcomes are beyond your control.
    • Engage in regular self-discipline like daily meditation or quiet reflection to calm the mind.

Note: In Digambar and Shwetambar traditions, there are nuanced interpretations of certain practices and texts, but the core idea of seeking inner stability through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct remains central.

If you’d like, I can share a simple meditation or reflection practice aligned with Jain mindfulness to begin today.
