If doing karma without any selfish motives also, for dharma, can it lead to re-birth ?
In Jainism, rebirth happens because karmic particles bind to the soul through our actions, speech, and thoughts. The key is not just the outer action, but the inner intention (bhaav) and the inflamed passions that accompany it.
- If you act for dharma with genuine detachment, fullness of right conduct, and without craving for a result, the binding of karmas is greatly reduced. Such actions are more about purification than about creating new bondage.
- However, even seemingly noble actions can bind some punya (merit) if there is some expectation, attachment, or emotional agitation involved. Pure, non-attached intention tends to minimize new karmic binding.
- The ultimate Jain goal is to shed all karmas and attain moksha (liberation). That requires continuous purification through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct, plus austerities if needed.
So, doing dharma with pure, non-selfish intent and detachment can help you progress toward liberation and reduce new rebirths; it does not guarantee you’ll avoid rebirth altogether unless you steadily purify and shed karmas. Different Jain traditions emphasize slightly different nuances, but the core idea is consistent: intention and inner state matter a lot in how karma binds.
