what are some causes of asrava?
In Jainism, asrava means the inflow of karmic particles into the soul. The primary causes are the five mental passions that bind karma:
- Raga (attachment or greed for pleasure)
- Dvesha (aversion or hatred)
- Moha (delusion or ignorance)
- Mana (pride or ego)
- Lobha (greed)
When a person experiences these passions, their intentional actions and inner states create karmic influx. Other supporting factors include:
- Wrong beliefs or misperceptions about the self, the world, or liberation
- Undisciplined senses and careless conduct (which nurture the above passions)
- Actions born from anger, deceit, or violence that accompany these passions
To reduce asrava, Jain practice emphasizes calming these passions through right faith (sāttvikā), right knowledge, and right conduct, along with regular self-discipline, repentance, and the purifying practice of niyamas (ethical restraints) and tapas (austerities).
