    How to navkarsi

    9 months ago 69

Navkarsi (Namokar Mantra) is the fivefold salutation at the heart of Jain practice. Here’s a simple way to understand and practice it.

    What you chant (Prakrit lines)

    • Namo Arihantanam
    • Namo Siddhanam
    • Namo Ayariyanam
    • Namo Ujjhayaṇam (Digambar: Ujjhāyaṇaṁ)
    • Namo Loe Savva-sahuṇam
    • Eso pancha namokāro
    • Savva-pāvappaṇāso
    • Maṅgalānaṁ ca Savvesim
    • Padhamam havai mangalam

    Essence (arth)

    • Bow to the five guṇa of the enlightened beings: Arihants, Siddhas, Āchāryas, Upādhyāyas, and all Sādhu/Sādhinīs.
    • The mantra purifies, helps remove karmic obstacles, and is the foremost auspicious chant.

    Simple practice steps

    • Posture: Sit in a calm, respectful posture before darshan or study.
    • Pronunciation: Recite slowly with understanding of each line and the meaning.
    • Rhythm: Many chant 9, 27, or 108 repetitions, daily or before prayer, meditation, or study.
    • Attitude: Maintain ahimsa (non-violence), truth, and a mindset of purification, not asking for worldly favors.

    Notes

    • The meaning and core structure are the same in both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions, though minor word forms or order can vary a little in different communities.
    • After the Navkar Mantra, practitioners often perform darshan with a focus on right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.
