How to do navkarsi
Navkarsi is a Jain fasting practice where the first meal is taken after a short period from sunrise.
How to do Navkarsi (main points) - Wake up and complete your morning shuddhi (bathing, mouth cleansing) and any daily prayers (stavan/paath), then perform a Samayik or Pratikraman as per your sangh. - Wait at least 48 minutes after local sunrise before taking the first bite or drink. - After the 48-minute wait, sit in a calm, fixed place, fold hands, and recite the Navkar mantra (at least three times) before starting the meal. - Consume food and water only after that Navkarsi moment; then resume the day with simple, saatvik foods as per your discipline. - If you are observing Paryushan or a similar vrata, follow your local sangh’s timings for breaking the fast (Parana) and any sect-specific rules. The generalNavkarsi rule still applies as the first meal after the 48-minute window. ( jainknowledge.com)
Quick notes - Some communities also observe Chauvihar (no food or water after sunset until Navkarsi the next day) or Tivihar (no food after sunset but water allowed) as part of the fasting discipline surrounding Navkarsi. Your local tradition may emphasize one of these timelines around Navkarsi.
