Explain Esopanch Namokaro in Navkar Mahamantra
Esopanch Namokaro (the fivefold Namokar) is the first part of Navkar Mahamantra. It is a respectful salutation to the Panch Parameṣṭhi and sets the attitude of humility before sacred beings.
Original text (five Namokar lines):
- णमो अरिहंताणं
- णमो सिद्धाणं
- णमो आयरियाणं
- णमो उवज्ज्झायाणं
- णमो लोए सव्व साहूणं
- Eso pañcha namokāro
- Savva-pāvappaṇāsaṇo
- Maṅgalāṇaṃ cha Savvesim
- Paḍhamam havei maṅgalaṃ
Arth (meaning) in simple Jain terms:
- Namo Arihantanam — I bow to the Arihants, who have conquered inner passions and attained omniscience.
- Namo Siddhanam — I bow to the Siddhas, the liberated souls beyond birth and death.
- Namo Ayariyanam — I bow to the Āchāryas, the spiritual teachers who guide the path.
- Namo Uvajjhayanam — I bow to the Upādhyāyas, the teachers who expound scriptures and conduct.
- Namo Loe Savva Sāhūṇam — I bow to all Sādhus and Sādhvīs (monks and nuns) who practice right conduct.
- Eso pañcha namokāro — These five bowings are being offered.
- Savva-pāvappaṇāsaṇo — They destroy all sins (paap).
- Maṅgalāṇaṃ cha Savvesim — Among all auspicious things, this is the most auspicious.
- Paḍhamam havei maṅgalaṃ — This Navkar Mantra is the foremost auspicious.
Important notes:
- Esopanch Namokaro honors five kinds of supreme beings (Pañca Parameṣṭhi) and does not name any individual person. The emphasis is on virtues and qualities.
- Both Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions accept the fivefold Namokaro; minor spellings or transliterations may differ, but the essence remains the same.
