We can eat coriander for chaturmas

    one year ago 360

In Jainism, the observance of Chaturmas (the four-month monsoon period) involves stricter dietary restrictions and increased vigilance in following the principle of ahimsa (non-violence). Jains avoid consuming certain green vegetables and root vegetables during this period, as the monsoon season is a time of increased microbial and insect life, and uprooting plants can cause more harm to living beings.

Coriander (dhaniya) is generally considered a leafy green. During Chaturmas, many Jain communities avoid consuming leafy greens (called "patra" or "hara saag") on specific days or throughout the entire period, depending on the local tradition and sect (Shwetambar or Digambar). The rules can vary:

    • Some Jains avoid all leafy greens (including coriander) throughout the entire Chaturmas.
    • Others may restrict only on specific days, such as Paryushan or Samvatsari, or on certain lunar days (e.g., Ashtami and Chaturdashi).

If you or your family follow a particular tradition, it's best to consult with your local Jain guru, temple, or elders for specific guidance. When in doubt, it is considered more virtuous in Jainism to err on the side of non-violence and avoid coriander during Chaturmas.
