We can eat sweetcorn
In Jainism, dietary practices are guided by the principle of ahimsa (non-violence). Jains avoid consuming foods that involve harming living beings, especially those with many senses or that are considered to have life in many forms.
Sweetcorn (fresh corn kernels) is generally considered acceptable for consumption by lay Jains, as the corn kernels are seeds and do not contain multiple living beings within them, unlike certain underground vegetables where entire plants are uprooted and many life forms are destroyed. However, highly orthodox Jains or those observing stricter vows (such as some ascetics) may avoid eating any form of seeds or grains during certain periods (e.g., Paryushana, or during the monsoon Chaturmas), as there is a higher risk of micro-organisms developing in moist grains.
In summary, for most lay Jains, eating sweetcorn is generally permitted, but one should always be mindful of the freshness, cleanliness, and the teachings of their specific Jain sect or tradition.
