    Sadhvi chastity rules

    one year ago 333

In Jainism, sadhvis (female ascetics) follow strict rules of chastity, which are part of the broader vows (mahavratas) taken by all Jain monks and nuns. The vow of celibacy (brahmacharya mahavrata) is one of the five great vows and is practiced at the highest level by sadhvis. Here are the key aspects of chastity rules for Jain sadhvis:

    1. Complete Celibacy:

Sadhvis must observe absolute celibacy in thought, word, and deed. This means they must not engage in any form of sexual activity and must avoid any situation or thought that could lead to passion or attachment.

    1. Avoidance of Temptation:

Sadhvis are required to avoid situations, conversations, or company that could arouse sensual desires. Their conduct, speech, and interactions are strictly regulated to prevent any possibility of temptation.

    1. Modesty in Dress and Behavior:

Sadhvis wear simple, modest clothing (often white or unstitched robes) and avoid any adornment. Their mannerisms, speech, and interactions with others, especially with men, are expected to be reserved and dignified.

    1. Limited Interaction:

They maintain distance from men and avoid being alone with them. Interactions with laymen or male monks are conducted in public or in the presence of other sadhvis.

    1. Control of the Senses:

Sadhvis practice control over all five senses, recognizing that sensual indulgence leads to attachment and hinders spiritual progress. This includes not only celibacy but also restraint in eating, speaking, seeing, hearing, and touching.

    1. Living in Community:

Sadhvis generally live in groups (sangha) with other nuns, which helps them support each other in upholding chastity and other vows.

    1. Vigilance and Confession:

Sadhvis are encouraged to be constantly vigilant about their thoughts and actions. If they feel they have faltered, even in thought, they confess to their spiritual guide (usually a senior sadhvi or acharya) and undertake appropriate atonement (prayaschitta).

These rules are guided by the Jain principle of aparigraha (non-attachment) and ahimsa (non-violence), as passions and attachments are considered forms of violence to the soul. The strict chastity observed by sadhvis is meant to help them progress toward liberation (moksha).
