what is Kesh-lochan
Kesh-lochan (loch) is a Jain ascetic practice of plucking hair after initiation (diksha). It is done to symbolize renunciation of worldly beauty and attachment to the body, and to cultivate patience and equanimity in the face of pain. Monks and nuns typically perform it once or twice a year, sometimes at special occasions or in the presence of the sangha. Digambar and Śvētāmbara traditions both regard it as an austerity, but the exact practice (e.g., shaving vs. plucking, frequency) can differ between the sects.
