Relevance of time on earth and mahavedeha kshetra
In Jainism, time (kāla) and the concept of different kshetras (realms or lands) are important aspects of cosmology.
Time (Kāla) in Jain Cosmology
Jainism teaches that time is eternal and cyclical, divided into two equal halves:
- Utsarpini (ascending half-cycle): Period of spiritual and material improvement.
- Avasarpini (descending half-cycle): Period of decline in virtue, happiness, and lifespan.
Each half-cycle is divided into six eras (aras), ranging from periods of utmost happiness and longevity to periods of misery and spiritual decline.
Bharat Kshetra (Earth) and Mahavideha Kshetra
- Bharat Kshetra refers to our world, specifically the area where human beings currently live and where the current Tirthankara, Mahavira, was born.
- Mahavideha Kshetra is another region in Jain cosmology, always existing in a spiritually favorable era.
Time in Bharat Kshetra:
- In Bharat Kshetra, time is currently in the fifth ara of the avasarpini (descending half-cycle), known as duhṣamā or the age of sorrow.
- During this era, spiritual practices are difficult, and no Tirthankaras are born.
Time in Mahavideha Kshetra:
- In contrast, Mahavideha Kshetra is unique because time there is always in the fourth ara, called duhṣamā-sushamā, which is spiritually auspicious.
- Tirthankaras are always present in Mahavideha Kshetra.
- Souls who have great spiritual merit may be reborn here, where attaining liberation (moksha) is more accessible due to favorable conditions.
Relevance
- Spiritual Opportunity: In Bharat Kshetra, the current era is not favorable for Tirthankaras or liberation. In Mahavideha Kshetra, the right conditions for spiritual progress and meeting living Tirthankaras always exist.
- Cycle of Births: A soul may be reborn in Mahavideha Kshetra through spiritual merit to continue the path to liberation.
- Aspiration: Jains aspire for spiritual progress so they may be reborn in Mahavideha Kshetra, increasing their chances of attaining moksha by listening to and practicing the teachings of current Tirthankaras.
Summary Table
| Kshetra | Current Time Era | Tirthankaras Present? | Possibility of Liberation? | |-----------------------|----------------------|-----------------------|---------------------------| | Bharat Kshetra | Fifth Ara (Duhṣamā) | No | Very Difficult | | Mahavideha Kshetra | Fourth Ara (Duhṣamā-Sushamā) | Yes | Possible |
In summary: According to Jainism, the relevance of time in Bharat Kshetra and Mahavideha Kshetra profoundly affects spiritual opportunity. While Bharat Kshetra currently lacks favorable conditions, Mahavideha Kshetra perpetually offers the right circumstances for spiritual advancement and liberation.
