Kids have school before navkarshi so which pachkan they can take
In Jainism, the practice of pachkan (making a vow or resolution regarding food and drink intake) is important, especially for those who cannot observe all rituals due to practical reasons such as school timings for children.
If kids have to go to school before Navkarshi (the first meal of the day, taken at least 48 minutes after sunrise), they can take a pachkan such as:
"Jevan Pachkan" or "Paan Pachkan": Children can resolve that, due to their school schedule, they will take their breakfast (food and/or water) before Navkarshi, but with the intention of following Jain principles as closely as possible. They should mentally recite the Navkar Mantra and seek forgiveness for not being able to follow the ideal practice due to unavoidable circumstances.
How to take the Pachkan:
- The child (or parent on behalf of the child) can say:
- If possible, take the pachkan in the presence of an elder, Guru, or in front of the image of a Tirthankar.
Important Points:
- This should be done only when absolutely necessary and not as a regular practice.
- The intention (bhav) behind the pachkan is very important.
- After school, children can try to follow other Jain practices as much as possible.
Summary: Jain children who must eat before Navkarshi due to school can take a jevan or paan pachkan with the proper intention, acknowledging the exception and seeking forgiveness. The focus should always remain on minimizing violations and maintaining awareness of Jain principles.
