History of Nana - Diyana - Nandiya tirth

    9 months ago 147

Nana Tirth, also known by the saying Nana Diyana Nandiya, is a very old Jain pilgrimage site associated with Mahavir Bhagwan and the early Jain community. The phrase Nana Diyana Nandiya roughly means “Nana (the place), Diyana (living divine presence), Nandiya (Nandivardhan, Mahavir’s elder brother)” and it is commonly recited to honor the living presence of a Jain Tirthankara in that place. The tirth is connected with the history of the Nanawa (Nana) gachchha and is considered part of the broader tradition of early Jain centers in western India. The temple houses a life-sized image of Mahavir Bhagwan in white, and inscriptions on site indicate great antiquity, with references to Vikram era dates that point to centuries of prosperity and religious activity at Nana. The place is noted for its stone inscription on the Nandishvar Dvipa (a symbolic emblem related to the tirth) and for projects and endowments associated with the local Jain sangha over many centuries. Today Nana Tirth is managed by the Vardhaman Swetambar Jain Pedhi, Nana Tirth, and provides facilities for pilgrims visiting from nearby regions. You can read more here and about the Nana Tirth site here .

If you’d like, I can summarize the main inscriptions and their dates mentioned at Nana Tirth in more detail, or point to the exact passages that describe Nana, Diyana, and Nandiya as they appear in authentic Jain texts and temple inscriptions.
