Sparsh na prakar
Jainism describes "sparsh" (स्पर्श), or touch, as one of the five types of sense perceptions (indriyas). In Jain philosophy, the sense of touch is associated with the skin and is called "sparshan indriya" (स्पर्शन इन्द्रिय).
The types of "sparsh" (touch) are generally described in terms of the different sensations or qualities that can be felt. According to Jain scriptures, especially as detailed in texts like Tattvartha Sutra, there are eight types of touch (sparsh na prakar):
- Guru (Heavy)
- Laghu (Light)
- Sheet (Cold)
- Ushna (Hot)
- Snigdha (Oily/Smooth)
- Ruksha (Dry/Rough)
- Mridu (Soft)
- Kathor (Hard)
These eight are the main types of touch sensations recognized in Jain philosophy, and they help in understanding the diversity and function of the sense of touch in living beings.
