best books for jain Grammer that can guide me to read jain texts

    9 months ago 160

To read original Jain texts, the most useful “grammar” you need is mainly Prakrit grammar (and later, a bit of Sanskrit). Here are good, traditional books used by Jain scholars:

    ---

    1. For beginner level – simple Prakrit grammar

    a) Saral Prakrit Vyakaran (सरल प्राकृत व्याकरण) – by Rajaram Jain

    • Language: Hindi explanation, Prakrit examples
    • Level: Very beginner friendly
    • Use: Best first book to understand letters, basic forms, and simple rules so you can start recognizing words in sutras and stotras.

    b) Prakrit Deepika (प्राकृत दीपिका) – by Sudarshanlal Jain

    • Language: Hindi + lots of examples
    • Level: Beginner to intermediate
    • Use: Step‑by‑step teaching of Prakrit for students who know a little Hindi/Sanskrit; includes exercises and many Jain-text examples.

    ---

    2. For more serious study of Prakrit (Jain texts language)

    a) Prakrit Vyakaranam – Hemachandracharya (प्राकृतव्याकरणम् – from Siddha‑Hema‑Shabdānushāsana)

    • Classical Jain grammar of Prakrit by Acharya Hemachandra.
    • Used for deep study of Agams and other Jain Prakrit works.
    • Take this up after you are comfortable with basic books like Saral Prakrit Vyakaran.

    b) Prakrit Prakash (with commentary)

    • A standard text on Prakrit grammar, often used by Jain and non‑Jain scholars alike.
    • Good once you already know some basics and want detailed rules and many examples.

    ---

    3. Helpful support books / background

These are not “grammars” only, but very useful to understand language tradition:

    a) Sanskrut Jain Vyakaran Parampara – Dr. Geharilal Sharma

    • Explains how Jain Acharyas contributed to Sanskrit grammar.
    • Helpful if you plan to later read Sanskrit commentaries on Jain texts.

    b) Articles/books on “Prakrit bhasha” used in Jain Agams

    • These explain how Ardhamāgadhī and other Jain Prakrits work in scriptures and give many examples from Agams and other Jain works.

    ---

    4. Practical tip – what order to study

    1. Start:

    - Saral Prakrit Vyakaran

    1. Then move to:

    - Prakrit Deepika

    1. After that, for serious scriptural study:

    - Hemachandra’s Prakrit Vyakaranam and/or Prakrit Prakash

Along with this, keep a simple Prakrit–Hindi / Prakrit–English glossary or Jain dictionary to help with words you meet in sutras.

    ---
