    List of Future tirthankar

    9 months ago 362

In Jain Dharma, “future Tirthankars” can be understood in two ways:

    1) Future Tirthankars in our present time‑cycle (Avasarpini)

    • We are in the 5th era (Pancham Kaal) of the present Avasarpini (descending half‑cycle).
    • In this half‑cycle, all 24 Tirthankars have already appeared, and the last one is Bhagwan Mahavirswami (24th Tirthankar).
    • Very important: According to Jain Agam and traditional Jain cosmology,
now no more Tirthankars will come in this present Avasarpini. So, from “today onwards” there is no future Tirthankar still to appear in our current time‑cycle. ( jainknowledge.com)

    2) Future Tirthankars in the next time‑cycle (Utsarpini) After this Avasarpini ends, a new Utsarpini (ascending half‑cycle) will start. In that next Utsarpini, again 24 new Tirthankars will come.

    About them, tradition says:

    • Number of Tirthankars: Again 24 in the next Utsarpini. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Names not 100% uniform: Different Jain texts and traditions give slightly different lists and spellings.
    • A commonly mentioned list (especially in some Digambar‑side cosmology books) for the next 24 Tirthankars is: ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Padmanābh 2. Surdev 3. Suparśvanāth 4. Svamprabh 5. Sarvānubhūti 6. Devshruti 7. Udaynāth 8. Pedhalputra 9. Pottil 10. Shatak 11. Suvrat 12. Amam 13. Shri‑niṣkaṣay 14. Niṣpulak 15. Nirmam 16. Chitragupt 17. Samādhīnāth 18. Samvarnāth 19. Yaśodhar 20. Vijay 21. Malladev 22. Devchandra 23. Anantvīrya 24. Bhadrakāt

    • Important note (Digambar / Śvetāmbara difference):
    - Many Digambar sources mention Padmanābh as the first Tirthankar of the next cycle. ( jainknowledge.com) - Some Śvetāmbara sources use a very similar name like Mahāpadma / Mahāpadmā for the first of the next cycle, or do not give a fixed public list at all. ( jainknowledge.com) - So, there is no single, absolutely uniform list accepted in the same way as our present 24 Tirthankars.

    3) Clarifications about popular misunderstandings From the Jain point of view (both Digambar & Śvetāmbara):

    • Rāvaṇ is not the “next Tirthankar” of our cycle or the next chovīsi. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Shri Krishna is also not listed as a future Tirthankar in standard Jain cosmology. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Some great souls of this era (like Rājā Udayan) are described as future‑birth Tirthankars in the next Utsarpini, but they are not Tirthankars now, and we do not worship them as current‑cycle Tirthankars. ( jainknowledge.com)

    4) Simple summary

    • In this Avasarpini:
    - 24 Tirthankars have already come, last is Mahavira. - No more future Tirthankar will appear now in our current half‑cycle.
    • In the next Utsarpini:
    - Again 24 Tirthankars will come. - Traditional lists differ slightly; a common Digambar‑side list starts with Padmanābh and ends with Bhadrakāt. - Names are not as universally fixed as the names of our current 24 Tirthankars.
