What is Sumeru Parvat?
In Jain Dharma, Sumeru Parvat (also called Meru Parvat) is:
- Cosmic central mountain, not a physical hill on Earth
- It stands at the exact center of Jambudweep (Jambudvipa) in Madhya Loka (the middle world). - It is part of Jain cosmology, not the Himalayan range or any mountain you can visit in normal geography.
- Axis of Jambudweep and Madhya Loka
- All directions and regions of Jambudweep (like Bharat Kshetra, Airavat Kshetra, Mahavideh etc.) are described with Sumeru at the center. - Around it are concentric islands (dvīps) and oceans (samudras). ( jainknowledge.com)
- Role in Tirthankara-charitra (life-stories)
- When a Tirthankara takes birth, the heavenly Indras take the newborn Tirthankara to the top of Sumeru for the janmābhiṣek (divine birth‑bath) and grand celebration. - This is described in the lives of many Tirthankaras. ( jainknowledge.com)
- Spiritual meaning
- Sumeru symbolizes a steady spiritual center. - Just as all regions of Jambudweep are arranged around Sumeru, a Jain sādhak is reminded to keep Samyak Darshan, Samyak Jnān, Samyak Chāritra (Right Faith, Knowledge, Conduct) at the center of life. ( jainknowledge.com)
- In Jain temples and practice
- Many Jains install a “Meru” vedi/altar or chaturmukhi Jina (four‑faced idols) arrangement, inspired by Mount Sumeru’s centrality. - Meru‑pratishthā means a consecration where the central altar represents Sumeru, showing the Jina as the spiritual center of the universe and our life. - Digambar and Shvetambar views
- Both traditions fully agree that Sumeru is: - The central, foremost mountain of Jambudweep - The cosmic axis of the middle world - They may differ slightly in numerical details (exact height, layers, diagrams), but the basic concept and spiritual message are the same. ( jainknowledge.com)
- Modern visual example
- At Jambudweep Complex, Hastinapur, there is a large model of Jambudweep with a tall Sumeru Parvat in the center, built specifically to teach Jain cosmology. ( jainknowledge.com)
