are there rituals when a girl gets her period

    8 months ago 190

In Jainism there are no big celebration rituals when a girl gets her first period, but there are some traditional rules / practices many families follow during any menstruation.

Because you asked simply “are there rituals…”, I’ll keep it very clear and basic.

    1. Is menstruation seen as bad or sinful in Jainism?

    • No. It is understood as a natural body process.
    • The soul (ātma) is always pure; only ritual purity (shuddhi / ashauch) rules change for a few days.
    • So, there is no sin in getting periods.

    2. Usual Jain “ritual rules” during periods

These are customs (maryādā), not hard scriptural punishments, and they vary by family and sect.

During active days of periods, many Jain families ask a girl/woman to:

    Generally avoid:

    • Entering the garbhagriha (inner sanctum) of the temple
    • Touching idols (murtis), puja items, and Jain scriptures
    • Doing abhishek, full dravya-puja, ārtī, snātra-puja, etc.
    • Doing tīrth-yatra or very big fasts/vrats (if health is weak)
    • In some stricter homes, doing chaukā or cooking food that will be offered in puja

    Allowed / encouraged:

    • Namokar Mantra and other stavans (mentally or softly at home)
    • Samayik / pratikraman in a simple, inner way (without touching idols or puja-dravya)
    • Listening to pravachan, Jain stories, or svādhyāy
    • Simple kindness, rest, and self-care – health is important in Jain dharma

    3. Special “first period” rituals?

    Traditionally:

    • There may be family customs like:
    - Giving the girl new clothes, sweets, or a small gift - Advising her gently on cleanliness and basic maryādā for these days
    • These are cultural, family-level things, not fixed Jain-śāstra rituals.
    • There is no compulsory Jain ceremony like a sacrament specifically for first menstruation.

    4. Digambar vs. Shwetambar (brief)

    • Digambar:
    - Usually stricter about not entering temple/garbhagriha or touching idols and scriptures during periods. - Encourages only bhāva-bhakti (inner devotion) at home.
    • Shwetambar (especially Murtipujak):
    - Similar idea: avoid idol-touch and inner sanctum during periods. - Some sanghs allow darshan from outside or joining satsang without going near idols.
    • Details differ by local sangh and family.

    5. Essence in Jain view

    • Periods are not a fault in the girl.
    • Rules are about ritual cleanliness and rest, not about judging her purity as a person.
    • Focus is on:
    - Ahimsa to the body (rest, not over-straining) - Inner purity – good thoughts, less anger/ego, more compassion - Simple, calm devotion instead of heavy outer rituals for a few days

If you tell me whether your family is Digambar or Shwetambar and how strict they are, the local practice can be understood in that background—but from Jain dharma’s side, there is no “big ritual” required when a girl first gets her period, only some temporary maryādā and extra care.
