    A Girnar lottery

    8 months ago 191

In Jain Dharma, any kind of lottery, gambling or betting (including something like a “Girnar lottery”) is not in line with the principles of right conduct.

    Key Jain points:

    1. Source of Income should be honest (samyak arjit)

    - Money should come from clear, truthful and non‑harmful work. - Lottery is based on chance, greed and the hope of sudden gain, not on honest effort.

    1. Increase of Kashāyas (anger, pride, deceit, greed)

    - Lotteries strongly encourage lobh (greed) and often maya (deceit) in how schemes are marketed. - Jain ethics teaches reducing these passions, not feeding them.

    1. Attachment & Wrong Belief

    - Dependence on luck, tickets and prizes strengthens moha (delusion/attachment) and mithyātva (wrong outlook). - A Jain is encouraged to rely on purushārth (right effort) and punya through dharma, not on gambling.

    1. If it is linked with a Tirth like Girnar

    - Girnar is an extremely holy Jain shashwat tirth, where Bhagwan Neminath attained moksha. - Using the name of such a sacred place for a lottery or gambling-like scheme reduces its sanctity and goes against the spirit of shraddhā and bhakti towards the Tirth. - Supporting such schemes (buying tickets, promoting them) is best avoided.

Simple Jain guidance: A practicing Jain should stay away from lotteries and gambling (even if named after a Tirth) and prefer simple, honest earning and direct daan (charity/donation) to genuine religious or social causes.
