Why was neminath called aristnemi
In Jainism, Neminath is the 22nd Tirthankara. He is also known as Aristanemi (or Arishtanemi). The name Aristanemi comes from Sanskrit, where "Arishta" means "pure" or "untouched," and "Nemi" means "rim" or "edge," often referring to the rim of a wheel.
According to Jain scriptures:
- Aristanemi was so named because, at his birth, the wheel (nemi) of his chariot was pure (arista), auspicious, and without blemish. This symbolized the purity and auspiciousness associated with his life and mission.
- Some texts also mention that his mother saw a dream of a pure, flawless wheel at the time of his conception or birth, further linking him to the name "Aristanemi."
Thus, Neminath is called Aristanemi because of the auspicious, pure wheel (nemi) associated with his birth, signifying his spiritual purity and greatness.
