In Jainism, Upādhyāya namaskara means bowing to the Upādhyāya, i.e. the Jain monk who is a teacher of scriptures.

It is the fourth bow in the Navkār (Namaskār) Mantra:

> णमो अरिहंताणं > णमो सिद्धाणं > णमो आयरियाणं > णमो उवज्जायाणं > णमो लोए सव्वसाहूणं॥

The fourth line — “णमो उवज्जायाणं” (Namo Uvajjāyāṇam) — is the Upādhyāya namaskara.

Meaning (arth) in simple words

• णमो उवज्जायाणं

“I bow to the Upādhyāyas” – the Jain monks who have deep knowledge of the Āgamas and scriptures and who teach and explain them to other monks, nuns and lay followers.

They:

• Preserve true Jain teachings (śruta‑jñāna)
• Explain right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct
• Help others progress on the path to mokṣa

Digambar & Śvetāmbara

• Both traditions recite this pad, with very small differences in pronunciation (उपाध्याय / उवज्झाय / उवज्जाय),
• But the meaning is the same: reverence to the scriptural teachers of the Jain Saṅgha.
