    Poems of Vikramarjuna vijaya

    8 months ago 169

“Vikramārjuna Vijaya” (also called “Pampa Bhārata”) is not a small poem-collection but a big Jain epic in Kannada, written by the great Jain poet Ādikavi Pampa (10th century).

    Very simply:

    • Author: Ādikavi Pampa – a devout Jain and one of the three great Jain Kannada poets (Pampa, Ponna, Ranna).
    • Language & Style: Written in Kannada, in champu style – that means a mix of poetry (padya) and prose (gadya).
    • Subject: It retells the Mahābhārata story, but:
    - Focus is mainly on Arjuna (Vikramārjuna). - Pampa compares Arjuna with his Jain patron king Arikesari.
    • Jain touch:
    - Though the story is from Mahābhārata, the values are Jain – emphasis on - karma (results of one’s deeds) - non‑violence and restraint where possible - right conduct and detachment. - Kṛṣṇa is shown more as a wise and powerful human leader/strategist, not as an incarnation of God in the bhakti sense.

    About the “poems” inside it

    Because it is champu:

    • The poetic parts describe:
    - cities, palaces, nature, seasons - battles, warriors, chariots - the feelings of heroes and queens.
    • The prose parts move the story forward.

Famous portions people often quote (in Kannada) include:

    • Descriptions of Arjuna’s heroism
    • Praises of king Arikesari (paralleling Arjuna)
    • Emotional verses about Karna, his generosity and tragic fate
    • Beautiful nature‑descriptions that show the culture of Karnataka of that time.

If you tell me what exactly you want— for example:

    • short Jain‑themed meanings from Vikramārjuna Vijaya, or
    • a summary of its cantos, or
    • sample verses in Kannada with simple meaning

—I can give you a few selected “poem-like” extracts (in paraphrased, simple English) and explain their Jain spiritual message.
