    Verses of Vikramarjuna vijaya poem

    8 months ago 235

Vikramārjuna Vijaya (also called Pampa Bhārata) is a very big Jain epic poem in old Kannada, written by the great Jain poet Ādikavi Pampa in the 10th century.

A few main points about the verses:

    • The poem has 14 parvas (chapters) and about 1600 verses in campū style – that means it mixes verse and prose.
    • It is a Jain retelling of the Mahābhārata:
    - Arjuna is made the central hero. - After the war, Arjuna (not Yudhiṣṭhira) becomes king. - Subhadrā (not Draupadī) is made the chief queen.
    • Pampa connects:
    - Arjuna with his Jain patron king Arikeśari so many verses praise both Arjuna and Arikeśari together.
    • The whole work is written from a Jain viewpoint:
    - Great stress on dharma, self‑control, detachment, and the karmic results of violence. - Kṛṣṇa’s role is made smaller and more political, and the emphasis is more on human effort and character than on divine intervention.

    Because the poem is:

    • very old,
    • very long,
    • and in classical Kannada,

there is no short, authentic list of “all verses” that I can safely reproduce here. Modern printed editions (with detailed introductions, notes and word‑by‑word meaning) are the best way to read the verses themselves.

If you tell me which part you are interested in (for example: “opening verses”, “Bhagavad‑gītā section”, “Kurukṣetra war description”), I can explain the Jain philosophical ideas in those portions in simple language and, where possible, paraphrase some famous lines rather than quote them inaccurately.
