What do sadhvis do in periods
For Jain sādhvīs (nuns), menstruation is treated as a natural physical process, not as a spiritual fault. Their basic approach is:
- Maintain strict cleanliness (shuddhi)
- Extra care in personal hygiene and keeping their clothes/āsan clean. - As always, they live very simply with minimal possessions, so they manage with whatever limited cloth and facilities are allowed in their order.
- Adjust some external activities
Details differ by tradition and sangh: - Śvetāmbara sādhvīs - Usually reduce/avoid direct involvement in certain formal or long rituals that demand the highest ritual purity (like long samayik, some specific pūjā‑related duties, etc.). - They still continue japa, svādhyāy, dhyān, pratikraman etc., often in a simpler or more private way, depending on their health and their ācārya’s maryādā. - Digambar tradition - Women do not become Digambar nude monks, but there are female ascetics (āryikā/sādhvī) in some lineages. - Rules are generally stricter in terms of ritual purity and austerity, so concrete practices in periods are decided by that lineage’s ācārya. - Core remains the same: extra care for shuddhi, discipline, and modest adjustment in routines if required.
- Inner sādhanā does not stop
- Navkār mantra, bhāva‑pratikraman, dhyān, svādhyāy, mahāvrata‑smaran etc. continue. - Menstruation affects outer ritual rules, not the soul’s purity. Jain āgamas and ācāryas always stress that real śuddhi is internal.
- Health is respected
- If a sādhvī is weak or in pain, her daily routine, travel, fasts or long standing postures may be softened with permission of her superior (pravarṭinī/āryikā), as ahiṁsā towards one’s own body is also important.
- Local maryādā matters
- Exact do’s and don’ts during periods are not uniform everywhere. They depend on: - Digambar / Śvetāmbara - Gacch / sangh / sampradāy - The specific ācārya’s instructions - Therefore, real sādhvīs always follow the maryādā given by their own guru.
Essence in Jain terms: Menstruation = natural body function. Soul’s path = unchanged. Some outer contacts and rituals are adjusted, but saṁyam, ahiṁsā and inner bhakti must continue as usual.
